Portrait Workshops 2017

For Artists in the region near Asheville, NC, The Art of Portrait Drawing is a special opportunity to study traditional portraiture in a two-day intensive workshop with Jason Rafferty. Space will be limited to a maximum of 6 students.

The workshops will take place:

1. Saturday and Sunday June 24th - 25th, 2017, 10am-3pm

2. ** Date changed to: Saturday and Sunday August 5th-6th 2017, 10am-3pm

In Asheville, NC - JMK Studio, in the Riverview Station building in the River Arts District.

A recipient of the prestigious Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, Jason has studied classical figurative drawing and oil painting for seven years in notable international studios, including Studio Escalier in Paris and Argenton-les-Vallées, France; the Fine Arts League of the Carolinas founded by Ben Long IV; and with landscape painter John Mac Kah; Nick Raynolds of the Water St. Atelier; the BFA program at UNC Asheville, and others. Recently he has appeared as a sketch artist on the Travel Channel, has exhibited at Greenhill Art Center in Greensboro, NC and was invited to exhibit at 4 Bridges Arts Festival 2017 in Chattanooga, TN, accepted as one of six Featured Emerging Artists. His artwork may be found in notable regional and international private collections.

For the past two years Jason has offered private lessons in classical approaches to drawing and painting to artists in the Western North Carolina region. He teaches out of a studio at Riverview Station in the Asheville River Arts District, a space shared with other working artists including his mentor and colleague John Mac Kah, a well-known landscape painter and River Arts District veteran, and Alisa Lumbreras, who operates the Asheville Young Artists' Atelier from the space.

"I learned more in one 3 hour drawing lesson with Jason Rafferty than in 8 years of high school and college art classes.  His knowledge and clear transmission of classical art theory and philosophy has revolutionized not only my drawing technique, but also my whole approach to how I think about art.  I will definitely be back for more lessons!"   (Ralph E. Lentz II, Senior Lecturer, History Dept. Appalachian State University)
