From these workshops, students should expect to gain a 'toolkit' of drawing and painting concepts and methods that they can take and make use of in their own practice going forward. You may or may not come away from a single day's workshop with a fully-finished piece, but you will gain a new skillset and means of looking at the subject that will allow you to feel empowered about moving forward with your creative work.

Drawing and painting is an oral tradition, passed down from teacher to student with hands-on demonstration. A short workshop can orient you in the right direction and saves years of trial and error on your own. You can see testimonials from my students below. Feel free to reach out with any questions and thanks for your interest!

Please note: if you are interested but finances are a restriction, a limited amount of workshop fee reductions may be available. Please reach out to discuss. I have received financial aid for much of my career as a student, and I believe it is essential to offer art education to people regardless of financial situation.

"I learned more in one 3 hour drawing lesson with Jason Rafferty than in 8 years of high school and college art classes.  His knowledge and clear transmission of classical art theory and philosophy has revolutionized not only my drawing technique, but also my whole approach to how I think about art.  I will definitely be back for more lessons!"   Ralph E. Lentz II, Senior Lecturer, History Dept. Appalachian State University

"Jason's positive attitude, encouragement, and talent saw me through the Into Light project. I am so grateful for him. He is an amazing teacher with a gift for knowing when to push, when to remain quiet, and how to notice and bring out the best in his students."

-Theresa Clower, student and founder of the Into Light project.

"I'm looking at my drawing and I can't believe I just did that."

-Mei Mei, student (high school senior.)

"I learned more in my lesson with Jason than I have in years of art class at school! He was a great teacher, leaving time to have fun while teaching me a ton. He answered my questions and gave me instruction on what I really wanted to learn. Can't wait to come back!"

-Ranger, student (high school freshman.)

“Finding the right teacher in the art world can be a daunting experience. Luckily I came into contact with Jason. He is patient, present, and gives wonderful, direct feedback. He allowed me to experiment and meander just enough to not only learn but grow.  He’s a fabulous artist, a great guy, and a wonderful teacher." - Joe Swierupski, student.

"I recently took a handful of classes with Jason Rafferty which proved to be invaluable in progressing my drawing skills.  With each class I could see improvements in my proportions and layout.  Through demonstrations he presented a number of very clear tools which, when used together give one a very strong foundation in drawing portraits and figures whether from life or images.  These presentations were followed with an opportunity to try each approach with Jason giving feedback as we worked.  Jason is very knowledgeable about artistic processes and history and is very generous in sharing his knowledge.  In four classes he provided me with a foundation for drawing that I never received in four years as an art major in college.  I'm very excited to move forward in drawing using these new drawing tools and techniques." - Puck Askew, Student
