Please note: I am no longer accepting new students in Asheville, as I will be moving in August to enter the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. I am very grateful to my community of Asheville students, and please keep a look out for future small workshops when I come back to visit!
I am pleased to offer private instruction in contemporary approaches to drawing and oil painting which build upon a traditional, classical foundation.
Ongoing weekly classes take place at JMK Studio at Riverview Station, 191 Lyman St. in the River Arts District of Asheville, NC. 2 - 3 hour sessions meet on Fridays and Saturdays, 35.00 for 2 hours, 50.00 for 3 hours. Instruction subjects are listed below, available to practice based upon your interests.
"Tradition is the spreading of fire, not the veneration of ashes."
Students working on still life drawing and painting.
- We work inside a beautiful historic studio in the Riverview Station building, as well as plein air in nearby public parks. Landscape-focused classes include frequent sketching outings with guided one-on-one instruction.
- You'll enjoy working in a space shared by a number of professional artists including myself, John Mac Kah and Alisa Lumbreras (Young Artists' Atelier of Asheville) and get inspiration from the abundance of original artwork in the studio.
"I recently took a handful of classes with Jason Rafferty which proved to be invaluable in progressing my drawing skills. With each class I could see improvements in my proportions and layout. Through demonstrations he presented a number of very clear tools which, when used together give one a very strong foundation in drawing portraits and figures whether from life or images. These presentations were followed with an opportunity to try each approach with Jason giving feedback as we worked. Jason is very knowledgeable about artistic processes and history and is very generous in sharing his knowledge. In four classes he provided me with a foundation for drawing that I never received as an art major in college. I'm very excited to move forward in drawing using these new drawing tools and techniques." - Puck Askew, Student
Various demos for private classes. Still life in acrylic, oils. Hand drawing demonstration. Landscape sketching at a local park.
Small group sessions are 35.00 for two hours or 50.00 for three hours, currently available on Fridays (9:30am-1pm) and Saturdays (1pm - 6pm). Other times may be available on request. Private sessions are possibly available, upon request, for 25.00 / hour.
You may come for one class or sign up for ongoing lessons, which is encouraged. It takes some time to learn the art, science and crafts of drawing and painting, but it is an incredibly enriching process. Also please note that slightly discounted rates are negotiable on a case-by-case basis for students in need.
