Commissions

Jason Rafferty welcomes your drawing and painting commission ideas.

**Commissions are currently booked up through mid-2017. But feel free to get in touch and discuss your idea!

Contact Jason Rafferty about a commission.

Jason has experience working in a variety of media and genres, from portrait drawings and paintings to landscapes, still life pieces, album and book covers, and more.

Example projects include:

- Portraits drawn in graphite, charcoal, conté, or painted in oil on panel hand-prepared with traditional chalk gesso.

- Your favorite landscape view drawn in ink, graphite, charcoal, or painted in oils.

- Classical Narrative Allegorical single figure and  multifigurative drawings and oil paintings.

(Who else will have one?)

-Album / book covers. The image is created by hand with traditional media, and is then scanned and formatted in Photoshop. The result is a finished digital design ready to be printed.

Commissioned fine art makes for an excellent, unique gift.

Jason often receives commissions to be given as gifts; consider the possibilities of giving an original piece of artwork to a loved one.

A Love of Fine Craftsmanship:

In our studio, we believe in creating "Art Objects" from the ground up. Having meticulously studied the science of best practices for oil painting craftsmanship while keeping abreast of new developments from industry leaders, we are able to bring years of experience combining the best knowledge from the long tradition of oil painting with the benefit of cutting-edge contemporary materials and research.

In short: we paint only on the most archival surfaces, most of which we prepare by hand in our studio, custom to the project.  And we paint with only the very finest oil colors from respected brands such as Blue Ridge Oil Colors, (a premium local paintmaker), Rublev, M. Graham, Gamblin, Windsor & Newton and others, along with mediums we prepare ourselves in the traditional manner, guranteeing a richness of color and a depth of fine layering that you will continually appreciate as you enjoy your picture for many years to come.

Similar to how "Slow Food" takes time to properly grow, cultivate and serve, and thus is recognized a premium product, so we create "Slow Art". We take the time necesssary to do each of our commissions well, to the best of our ability. At the same time we work hard and efficiently to get your piece done in a timely manner. Projects of some complexity can average 6 months from start to finish (and we are working on a few pictures at any given time.)

The Perfect Frame:

We are proud to partner with local businesses in the Asheville, NC area to provide a quality selection of custom framing for both prints and originals. We can help you create the perfect look to suit your aesthetics, whether simple or elegant, contemporary or traditional.

Payment Procedure

We first discuss the project with a client to get a scope of its complexity, and to ascertain any special resources such as reference materials necessary for its execution. Once we agree upon a subject and its size and materials, we give a quote and set a date for commencing the project. We ask for a 50% down payment before commencing work on a project. Upon receipt of payment we will start work at once and keep you updated as the process unfolds. You can expect progress photos and timely, regular communication.

Upon completion of the project to your satisfaction, the remaining 50% is paid, at which time the piece may be delivered or picked up at our studio in the River Arts District of Asheville, NC. For interested clients we offer the option of payment by installments to build up to the inital 50% down payment as well as during the commission's creation process. Note that 7% sales tax is applicable to in-state North Carolina sales.

Clients & Collectors are saying:

"A big thanks to Art of Jason Rafferty, not sure how to make a little girl feel more special! She has walked by it 100 times tonight! We're so happy, and proud to be a part of a young artist's growth. He does amazing landscapes and this was a straight up perk of the job. A memory for years to come and an honor to be among the first of your portraits. She enjoyed her time with you and is so proud to be a piece of your art. Thanks Jason!"

-Newton Clark, NC

"We commissioned Jason to paint two original works of art, one of our home and one landscape showing a lake and mountains near our home.  Jason worked hard on the project and we are very happy with the results. Both pieces of art are prominently displayed in our home.  Thank you Jason!"

- Brian Smith, NC

"The Basilica drawing is already on the wall at home. As the lighting in the room changes, it takes on different personalities, really quite amazing. Thanks for your time and sharing your passion."

- Cameron Karger, General Manager, The Point Resort, NY

"Jason created the most amazing tattoo design ever for me. He really took the time to understand completely what I was wanting and touched base with me every step of the process to ensure the design was perfect. Jason is an amazing artist and a wonderful person to work with. I will go to him for any and all designs in the future."

-Kristin Todd, NC

"You are so easy to work with - I love your work!!"

-Anne Schiffman, NYC & PA

"Jason has a wonderful gift for capturing moments, essence and that shady section of reality and imagination -- where we all live but don't know it..."

-Salvatore Trento, Scientist, Author, Field Guide to Mysterious Places

"I just received my beautiful oil painting. It is hanging on my wall, and I can't stop gazing at it. I'm so glad I decided to buy it, and I thank you for the wonderful shipping and for your incredible talent. Every time I walk by the painting, I admire the beauty it brings to my house."

- Janis Frankel, US

"The Water Tower painting just really took me back to summers as a kid in Philadelphia. I feel happy every time I look at it. I admire your ability to make something so beautiful out of a subject that many would not see as all that beautiful. That is a wonderful gift to have and you should share that with the world... We need people with talent like yours to help us see what the world can be if only we look at things in a different way."

-Sharon Feingold, US

Artwork as a gift:

"You have made one 60-year-old a VERY happy woman!! LeeAnn (client's sister) is still in a state of shock, I think, that she really & truly owns "Chiara"! She's brought up the subject several times since our Asheville trip, but she never seriously considered actually owning the painting. LeeAnn was proud of & happy owning one of your sketches. She had it framed & displayed prominently in her den.

Before I left for home yesterday, she'd found the perfect spot for her latest Jason Rafferty: on a small table beside a chair where she always sits in her living room. Thank you again for making it possible for me to give my sister something she liked so much & will treasure forever!!"

-Debbie Garretson, TN

Friends, Associates & Newsletter Followers are saying:

"You are such a promising artist; the drawings you brought to show me rocked!"

- Luke Allsbrook, International Artist, Tour Artist, Prince of Wales

"I have to say that your work, as evidenced on your website, is very good. Largely exceptional, I'd venture, and I am not at all easily impressed."

-John Brinkmann, publisher, American Bungalow

"For years now I've wathced Jason hone his skills as a painter with more passion, dedication and -- indeed! -- raw talent than I have ever encountered in an aspiring artist. That is not an exaggeration, it is the truth... With a contribution to Jason you'll be in the vanguard of classical art's exciting revitalization by helping to build up a driving personality -- for I can say with utmost confidence that he will never stop cultivating his gift."

- Ian Montgomery, Fullbright Scholar, International Teacher.

"Your sketches and paintings are so beautiful. Full of deep caring, compassion for ordinary human beings and for the simple and profound beauty of nature - so under attack today."

-Jeanine Maland, US
